Why
Both ends of the bell curve at once.
Twice exceptional (2e) means gifted and disabled at once. Years ahead in some things and years behind in others, in the same person, on the same day.
A child can argue a case like an attorney, then be stuck on how to start a two-line task. Both are true. Neither cancels the other.
Every system a child meets flattens that into one number. School reports, assessments, checklists. The number says average, and it is wrong in both directions.
Three ways a 2e profile gets missed
Dr Dan Peters, a psychologist and co-founder of the Summit Center, describes three ways it goes wrong.
- The strengths mask the challenges.
- The challenges mask the strengths.
- The two cancel out, and the child is recorded as average while quietly drowning.
The third is why E Squared exists. A school report squashes a jagged profile into “meets expectations”. A record built moment by moment doesn’t have to.
Flattened to average versus the whole shape
| Flattened to average | The whole shape |
|---|---|
| one number | both peaks and both troughs |
| “meets expectations” | ahead here, behind there, on the same day |
| strengths hide the struggle, or the reverse | each recorded on its own terms |
| the two cancel out | neither cancels the other |
| fix the weakest area, again and again | start from what is true this week |
| a report that reads like school | a report an assessor can read on its own terms |
| unevenness as a gap to apologise for | unevenness as the expected shape |
E Squared keeps the shape of the person. Both peaks and both troughs, neither one cancelling the other.
You log moments as they happen. Over months they draw the profile: what comes easily, what costs a lot, and what changes with capacity.
Across the eight focus areas, wildly uneven is the expected result. It isn’t a gap to apologise for.
When a review comes, the report shows a home education assessor that shape as it is. It doesn’t pretend to look like school.
Your child’s side is separate and asks nothing of them. A 2e child spots anything built down to them and rejects it, so nothing there is. No streaks, no scores, nothing to earn, and no AI ever speaks to them.
Being is the person: their interests, capacity, sensory experience, and the state they are actually in today. Doing is everything downstream: the learning, the output, the record, the report.
So we start with the person and let the rest arrive. It still gets done. It gets done from what is real.
Being first. Doing follows.
