e²e²A school that seems to understand your PDA child in every other way often turns rigid the moment attendance comes up. That's usually the attendance stats talking, not the staff.
School attendance is tracked as a percentage, and that percentage is what a school reports upward, not the reasons behind it. A later start or an earlier finish that would genuinely help a PDA child get through the day still counts against the number. That's usually why a school that seems to understand your child in every other way turns rigid the moment attendance comes up.
This isn't usually because a teacher or principal doesn't care. Attendance is one of the few things a school gets measured on from outside, by an inspectorate or an education authority, and that measurement has no field for "arrived at 10am because mornings are hard." It just reads as absence.

For home-educating families raising a 2e child: gifted and neurodivergent at once, often PDA, autistic, ADHD or AuDHD.
For a PDA child, that mismatch is the whole problem. Demand avoidance and a fixed start time don't sit well together, and a rigid attendance policy is one more demand stacked on a system already asking a lot.
Attendance is one of the few numbers a school has to report to whoever oversees it, so it becomes a proxy for how well the school is judged to be doing. A drop in the figure gets noticed even when every individual absence had a good reason.
Most education systems set a minimum threshold, often somewhere around 90%, and falling below it usually triggers automatic contact from the school. That contact doesn't distinguish between one long illness and fifty short, unavoidable late mornings. The system treats them the same.
Thresholds and processes differ by country and change over time, so check your own education authority's current rules rather than assume ours.
In our case, the school was willing to talk about the difficulty in the abstract. What it wouldn't do was build a genuinely different day: a later start, an earlier finish, or the room to leave once our kid had hit their limit. Every version of that conversation came back to the same thing, their attendance figure, not what the day was actually costing our kid.
That's not a story about one unkind school. It's what the incentive does.
A ten-minute late arrival marked "authorised" still shows up as ten minutes of absence on the record a school submits. Multiply that across a term, and a school that bends for one child risks a number that looks worse than a school that doesn't bend at all.
Staff can be sympathetic in the corridor and still say no in the meeting. The policy isn't personal. It's what happens when a fixed target meets a child whose capacity genuinely varies day to day.
Name the tension directly: a PDA child's ability to cope with a full school day isn't fixed, and an attendance policy assumes it is. The policy has no category for "managed 9 to 1 today, and that was already a lot."
What families usually ask for is small in practice:
None of that is unreasonable. It's also exactly the kind of variation an attendance percentage has no room to record. On paper, an hour missed for capacity looks identical to an hour missed for truancy, and that's the resistance you're actually running into.
If attendance keeps falling, a school can bring in an attendance officer, sometimes called an education welfare officer, whose job is specifically the numbers. Meetings get more formal.
Letters arrive. In some places, persistent low attendance can eventually lead to legal steps against the parent, regardless of the reason behind it.
The word that matters here is EBSA, emotionally based school avoidance. It's the term professionals increasingly use instead of "refusal" or "truancy" for a child who can't manage attendance because of demand avoidance, anxiety, or sensory overload, not because they're choosing to skip school.
Naming it EBSA in writing, backed by a GP, psychologist, or other relevant professional, changes how a school and its authority are supposed to respond. It reframes a falling number as a support need instead of a discipline problem.
That reframe doesn't always land quickly. Plenty of parents get the letter before anyone uses the word EBSA.
The accommodations that work are the ones that get written down and coded correctly, not the ones agreed verbally in a corridor. A verbal agreement evaporates the moment a new attendance officer takes over the file.
Things worth asking for in writing:
Getting this in writing takes more than one meeting, usually. It's still the difference between a school that quietly works with you and one that resets to zero every time the person in the attendance role changes.
For a lot of families, the attendance fight is what finally makes home education look reasonable, not because the child can't learn, but because the fight itself has become the main event. If the school's line every week is about the percentage rather than your kid, that's information worth sitting with.
If your child has gone from managing a modified day to being unable to attend at all, Autistic Burnout and School Refusal covers what that shift usually means and why it isn't defiance. Can a school refuse to let my child arrive late?
A school can decline to formally agree to a later start time, and many do, because a late arrival still counts as partial absence on the record they submit. Whether they're required to accommodate it depends on your local education authority's rules around reasonable adjustments for a disability or additional need. Ask your school in writing and, if refused, ask your education authority what the actual rules say.
Why does my PDA child's school care more about attendance stats than my child?
Usually because the school is externally judged on its attendance percentage, and that number has no way to record why an absence happened. Staff can be sympathetic individually and still be bound by a policy built around the figure, not the child in front of them.
What is EBSA and how does it relate to school attendance targets?
EBSA stands for emotionally based school avoidance. It's the term used for a child who can't manage attendance because of anxiety, demand avoidance, or sensory overload, rather than choosing to skip school. Getting EBSA named in writing, usually by a GP or psychologist, changes how a school and its authority are meant to respond to falling attendance.
Is school attendance data more important than my child's wellbeing?
To the school as an institution, the attendance figure is what gets reported and scrutinised, so in practice it often drives decisions more than any individual child's day-to-day capacity does. That's a structural problem with how attendance is measured, not a claim that staff don't care about your child.
Can attendance pressure be a reason to move to home education?
Yes. Many families arrive at home education after months of fighting an attendance policy that couldn't flex for their child's needs, not because the child stopped being able to learn. Home education is legal in the UK and Ireland, and there's no requirement that it look like a school day.
