Built by a home-educating parent with a PDA profile, not by a clinician. Everything in here comes from use rather than from a qualification.
Most people know far more than they have ever studied. We pick it up from stories, games, hobbies and daily life, because the information arrives with a reason, a context and something we already care about. The same facts handed over as a list to memorise land differently, and that gap says more about context and choice than about ability.
This is the idea behind learning through everyday experiences, and it matters a great deal for children who find conventional lessons hard.
I know things I never sat down to study. Most adults can say what happens when someone has a stroke, what a Viking longship was built for, what offside means, or why bread rises. Some of us can recite the family tree of a fictional royal house. Nobody took notes.
The knowledge arrived through a drama, a book, a match, a game, a hobby or a job. It stuck because it was attached to something: a character we cared about, a problem we wanted solved, a conversation we were part of.
Researchers call this incidental learning, meaning learning that happens as a by-product of doing something else. A well-known example is vocabulary. Nagy, Herman and Anderson (1985) found that eighth-graders picked up small amounts of word meaning from a single reading of a passage. They argued that these small gains add up to much of the vocabulary growth during school years.
So the question is not whether people can learn without trying. It is why the same person can absorb so much from a story and so little from a worksheet.
Memorising a fact means holding it as an isolated item. Understanding means connecting it to other things you know, so it has somewhere to sit.
Isolated facts feel abstract because there is nothing to attach them to. They are also easy to lose, since nothing else in your head points to them.
The psychologist David Ausubel argued in 1968 that the most important factor in learning is what the learner already knows. His term was meaningful learning: new material gets linked to existing knowledge instead of being stored word for word.
Two studies show how strong the effect is:
That is one reason a child can follow a complicated plot in a world they know well and stumble over a short paragraph about something unfamiliar.
A story gives information a structure: someone wants something, something gets in the way, and there are consequences. Facts that would be a list in a textbook become reasons for what happens next.
A meta-analysis by Mar and colleagues (2021) pooled over 75 samples and more than 33,000 participants. It found that stories were easier to understand and recall than essays.
This is how a child ends up knowing the geography of a fictional continent. Or the difference between a Roman and a Greek god, learned from a game. The interest often leads somewhere. Plenty of people first came to history, space, languages or biology through a story and then wanted the real thing.
One caution matters here. Fiction is not always accurate. Marsh, Meade and Roediger (2003) found that people absorbed errors from stories and repeated them later as facts. A story is a good way into a subject. It is not a source to trust without checking.
Experience gives abstract ideas something to refer back to. A child who has doubled a recipe has met fractions in a form they can taste.
A made-up example, not any real child: two people need to learn about measurement. One gets a worksheet on converting centimetres to metres. The other is cutting fabric for a cushion cover and finds out, with the fabric already cut, that the cover is 3 centimetres too small. Both learn the unit. Only one has a reason to remember it.
The best-known evidence comes from Carraher, Carraher and Schliemann (1985). Child street vendors in Brazil handled the arithmetic of their trade successfully. Many did worse on school-style versions of similar problems.
The skill was there in both cases. What changed was whether it had a context and a purpose.
Experience also helps instruction work. Schwartz and Bransford (1998) found that students who first analysed contrasting cases got more out of a lecture afterwards than students who prepared in other ways. The experience made the explanation make sense.
Learning because you want to and learning because someone has told you to are different experiences, and they can produce different results.
Self-determination theory (Ryan and Deci, 2000) proposes that people do best when they feel they have some choice, feel capable, and feel connected to others. A meta-analysis of 128 studies by Deci, Koestner and Ryan (1999) found that expected tangible rewards reduced intrinsic motivation. Pressure shifts the reason for doing something from "I'm curious" to "I have to".
Curiosity also helps memory directly. Gruber, Gelman and Ranganath (2014) found that when people were curious about an answer, they remembered it better, and they remembered unrelated material they saw while waiting for it. This held in a test the next day.
Then there is cognitive load, the limit on how much a person can process at once. A demand to memorise, perform and be assessed all at once uses up working memory that the content itself needs.
It also explains why a child can recite hundreds of details about a favourite fictional universe but not hold a short list of unrelated facts. The universe has prior knowledge, a story, a reason to care, and no one checking. The list has none of those.
I know this one from the inside. In third class, my Irish teacher sent me out to put on my unusual woolly coat. She then used me to demonstrate "I'm wearing my coat" while the class laughed. I have very little Irish today. I got the information. What I took from it was the feeling around it.
For some, it appears so, though the research is thin.
Many autistic people describe attention that is intensely interest-driven. The monotropism theory (Murray, Lesser and Lawson, 2005) proposes that autistic attention tends to concentrate on a few interests at once. That would make it hard to redirect on demand. This is a theory, not a settled finding.
PDA (pathological demand avoidance) is described as an anxiety-driven need to avoid everyday demands, including ones the person would otherwise enjoy. It is not a formal diagnosis in the DSM-5 or ICD-11. I found no research testing learning approaches with PDA children, so this section rests on clinical descriptions, parent reports and community guidance such as the PDA Society. Children respond differently, and none of this applies to every child.
Self-directed learning is not effortless, and direct instruction is not harmful in itself. The claim is narrower. For some children, how a thing is asked changes whether it can be learned at all.
Curriculum-led learning starts with the topic and hopes interest follows. Interest-led learning starts with the interest and lets the topic follow. Both reach the same facts by different routes.
Interest-led learning has a particular strength: questions come first. A child who has spent a month trying to build a working bridge in a game has a dozen questions about load, shape and materials by the end. An explanation of tension and compression lands differently when it answers a question they already have.
There is research behind the idea of questions before answers. Kapur (2008) found that students who struggled with a problem before being taught the method went on to understand the concept better than students taught first. Bonawitz and colleagues (2011) found that preschoolers shown one function of a toy explored it less than those left to play. They also found fewer of its other functions.
Both findings come from carefully designed settings, and neither means teaching is unhelpful. Structured teaching and deliberate practice matter. Kirschner, Sweller and Clark (2006) argued that beginners need guidance. A review by Alfieri and colleagues (2011) found that unassisted discovery did worse than explicit instruction, while guided discovery did better.
Geary (2008) makes a further point. Skills like reading and formal arithmetic are recent inventions that most children don't pick up unaided, so they usually need to be taught.
The useful question is not which approach is right. It is when each one helps, and whether the questions have had a chance to form before the answers arrive.
Parents often miss it because they are looking for something that resembles schoolwork. The learning is there. It just has a different shape.
Some examples:
Taking part in an activity is not the same as learning from it. The evidence is usually in what changes afterwards. That could be new vocabulary, a new question, a connection between two things, or a correction of something the parent said.
Turning every interest into a formal lesson can end the interest. I call my own approach Interest Without Interest. The moment I get excited about something, it can die. So I check once, step back, get the materials if they're needed, and say nothing, even when it has cost €97. My longer thoughts on that are in when strewing doesn't work.
Home education has room for this. A day can include cooking, a game, a long conversation, a walk and a drawing, and each one is a source of learning.
I think of my approach as Teach As And When. I provide the materials, I help when I'm asked, and I don't plan every stage. It passed our first home education assessment. The assessor told me there's no right or wrong way to do it.
A survey of 232 unschooling families (Gray and Riley, 2013) reported many benefits, but it was self-selected and based on parent reports. It tells us about experience, not outcomes. Learning at home still needs honest attention to gaps, especially in reading and maths, and sometimes explicit teaching.
What it doesn't need is control of every stage. A parent can offer resources when curiosity appears and then step back.
Recording this kind of learning is the hard part, because it doesn't produce worksheets. I use E Squared for it: I write what happened in plain words, and the app matches it to the curriculum's key skills. My child never sees any of it. How to record learning when your kid won't do worksheets covers the method, and what counts as evidence of learning at a home education review covers what an assessor wants to see.
No. Learning can begin with a story, an experience, a question or an interest, and context is what turns information into something a person can use.
Good education can combine curiosity, experience, explanation and structured teaching. The order matters more than the choice between them.
How often do we ask children to learn the answers before they've had the opportunity to develop the questions?
